Melbourne Beach's Whole Fall Weekend Fits on One Block of Ocean Avenue

Two addresses on Ocean Avenue sit side by side. Fire Station 58 is at 507 and Ryckman Park is at 509. On Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17, those two lots host all three of the town's fall events. The town's own notice calls the weekend "jam-packed with Fall festivities." The fire station's Haunted House runs both nights. The Parks Board's Fall Festival takes over the park Saturday afternoon. The Police Department's movie screening follows on the same lawn that evening.

You can do the whole weekend on foot. That matters more this October than usual. FDOT's resurfacing work on A1A is set to begin this month, with overnight lane closures that start at 9 p.m., right when the Haunted House line is busiest.

Three events, two addresses, one weekend

Here is the full schedule. Every event on it sits within a few steps of the Ryckman Park lawn.

Day Time Event Host Where
Fri, Oct 16 7–10 p.m. MBVFA Haunted House Melbourne Beach Volunteer Firefighters Association Fire Station 58, 507 Ocean Ave
Sat, Oct 17 4–6 p.m. Fall Festival, free Melbourne Beach Parks Board Ryckman Park, 509 Ocean Ave
Sat, Oct 17 6–9 p.m. MBVFA Haunted House Melbourne Beach Volunteer Firefighters Association Fire Station 58, 507 Ocean Ave
Sat, Oct 17 7 p.m. Movie in the Park: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, free Melbourne Beach Police Department Ryckman Park, 509 Ocean Ave

The Fall Festival is the kid-focused part of the weekend. It has hayrides, games, food trucks, a Lil' Ninjas obstacle course and trunk-or-treat, and it's free. The Haunted House is a different event entirely. The volunteer firefighters say it "delivers big scares" and ask parents to consider keeping small children away. Food trucks will be on site both nights, and a DJ will play for the line. One thing is new this year. In the association's words, "This year we are also adding alcohol for sale."

Saturday, hour by hour

Saturday is the day the two schedules overlap, and the overlap shapes the evening. The Fall Festival ends at 6 p.m., which is when the Haunted House opens next door. The movie starts at 7 p.m., an hour into the Haunted House's three-hour run. Here is how the evening plays out on the block:

  1. 4 p.m. The Fall Festival opens at Ryckman Park. Hayrides and the obstacle course run until 6.
  2. 6 p.m. The festival closes and the Haunted House opens at Station 58. Food trucks are on site there too, so dinner can come from either lot.
  3. 7 p.m. E.T. starts on the Ryckman Park lawn. The Police Department is handing out free popcorn while supplies last.
  4. 9 p.m. The Haunted House closes. Saturday is the second and last of its two listed nights.

Because the movie and the Haunted House overlap from 7 to 9, a group that splits up still ends up a few dozen steps apart. Friday is simpler. The Haunted House is the only event that night, and it runs an hour later, until 10 p.m.

The pier at the end of the block

Ryckman Park is not just a lawn. It sits at the river end of Ocean Avenue, where the street ends at the Melbourne Beach Pier. According to Brevard County's historic landmark guide, the Indian River and Atlantic Railway Company built the pier in 1888 and 1889 from wood planks and pilings. The town lists the pier under the same 509 Ocean Avenue address as the park. Its New Year's Day walking history tour of Old Melbourne Beach started there on January 1, 2026.

Hometown News described that tour. Walkers went down the pier and then through Ryckman Park, past the Ryckman cottage and a replica of the town's post office. The town's events calendar shows the park in use this month even before the fall weekend. Sunset Yoga is scheduled there on Tuesday, October 13. This weekend's festival sets up on the same lawn as the cottage and the post office replica, a short walk from the pier.

Dinner on the same block

If you'd rather sit down than eat from a food truck, Ocean Avenue has several restaurants within walking distance of the park.

  • Djon's Steak & Lobster House, 522 Ocean Ave. This is the closest sit-down option to the festival, on the same stretch as the park. Djon's serves steaks, lobster, seafood and crafted drinks, and takes reservations.
  • Ocean 302, 302 Ocean Ave. Ocean 302 serves modern American food, cocktails, wine and a happy hour menu. It lists Friday and Saturday hours of 3:30 to 10 p.m., which leaves room for an early dinner before Saturday's 7 p.m. movie.
  • Oceanside Pizza, 300 Ocean Ave, Suite 6. New York-style pizza, subs, pasta and salads. Oceanside Pizza is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. It's an easy pickup if you plan to bring dinner to the movie.

Sunday morning has two breakfast options on the same street. Sunnyside Cafe, at 300 Ocean Ave, Suite 11, opens at 6 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday and serves pancakes, omelets, sandwiches and coffee until 2 p.m. Rockies Cafe, at 315 Ocean Ave, is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays and makes hot mini doughnuts with cinnamon sugar. Rockies is family-owned and serves coffee, breakfast burritos, smoothies and baked goods.

Why walking makes sense this October

Driving in for the weekend gets more complicated after dark this year. The town announced on September 28 that FDOT's resurfacing and safety project on A1A "is slated to begin in October." The notice asks drivers to "anticipate intermittent single-lane closures between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM."

That window starts while Friday's Haunted House still has an hour to go, and the same hour Saturday's run ends.

FDOT's project page gives the scope. The project covers 3.22 miles of State Road A1A from Oak Street to U.S. 192 through Indialantic and Melbourne Beach, at a cost of $3.5 million. It runs from Fall 2026 to an estimated Spring 2027 completion. It also includes:

  • Rebuilding the traffic signal where A1A meets Oak Street
  • Lighting upgrades
  • Pedestrian improvements, including audible features to assist visually impaired pedestrians
  • Improved sidewalks and curb ramps upgraded to current ADA standards

So the overnight lane closures come with pedestrian upgrades on the same road. In the meantime, the walking route between Rockies at 315 and Djon's at 522 doesn't touch A1A at all.

South of town there is a second change. The town relayed an update on October 6 for the Sebastian Inlet Bridge replacement. Starting around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, weather permitting, both directions of A1A, also called the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway, shift from south of the bridge in Indian River County to north of it in Brevard County. The shift lasts "through Late 2028." The town says this is "to enhance safety and long-term resiliency." Anyone coming to Ocean Avenue from the inlet direction this weekend will be on the new traffic pattern in its first week.

At the Susie Wilson team, we follow these Ocean Avenue weekends and A1A schedules all season because they shape what day-to-day life near the river end of town is like. If you own on the island and want to know how a block like this one figures into your home's value, request a free home valuation and consultation. We'll talk through what's changing around you this fall.
